Thinking About Marijuana After 65? Doctors Warn of Overlooked Health Risks

While the therapeutic potential of cannabis is recognized for various conditions, medical professionals are raising specific concerns about its use among adults over 65. Experts emphasize that older individuals must be acutely aware of unique and often overlooked health risks associated with marijuana consumption.

The aging body processes substances differently. For seniors, cannabis can pose heightened dangers, including increased risk of dizziness, falls, and confusion. These effects are particularly concerning given the higher prevalence of balance issues and bone fragility in this age group. Furthermore, marijuana can have complex and potentially hazardous interactions with common prescription medications, such as blood thinners, certain pain relievers, and various treatments for chronic conditions like heart disease or diabetes.

Cognitive impacts are another critical area of caution. THC, the primary psychoactive component, may exacerbate or unmask underlying cognitive issues, including dementia. This is a significant consideration for a population already at greater risk for cognitive decline. The modern legal market also presents a challenge, as today's cannabis products are frequently much more potent than what older adults may have encountered in the past, making dosing difficult and side effects more severe.

Geriatric specialists advise that any senior considering cannabis for symptom relief must engage in a thorough conversation with their healthcare provider. This discussion should focus on individual health status, current medications, and specific therapeutic goals to carefully weigh potential benefits against these considerable risks.
