Direct Relief’s Power for Health Initiative Brings Resilient Power to Pennsylvania Community Health Center

Direct Relief has wrapped up work on a new solar and battery storage system at North Side Christian Health Center in Pittsburgh. It is the first project in Pennsylvania to go live under the group's Power for Health initiative, which aims to keep medical facilities running during outages.

The system pairs rooftop solar panels with battery storage, so the health center can keep the lights on and critical equipment working even if the local grid fails. That matters in a region where severe storms and aging infrastructure have caused repeated blackouts in recent years. For a clinic that serves mostly low-income and uninsured patients, losing power is not just an inconvenience. It can mean canceled appointments, spoiled vaccines, and interrupted care for people who have nowhere else to go.

Direct Relief chose NSCHC because of its role as a safety-net provider. The clinic sees thousands of patients a year, many with chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Those patients often rely on the clinic for regular checkups and medication refills, so any disruption hits them hardest.

The project took several months to complete, from design to installation. The health center's staff also received training on how to monitor and maintain the system. Direct Relief says it plans to fund similar projects at other community health centers across the country, with a focus on places that face high disaster risk or serve vulnerable populations.

For now, the staff at NSCHC are just glad to have a reliable backup. The solar array will also cut down on monthly electricity bills, freeing up money that can go toward patient services. It is a small step, but one that makes a real difference in day-to-day operations.
