Health centre closures across Somalia are cutting off life-saving care for millions, deepening an already severe humanitarian crisis. More than 60 clinics have suspended operations in recent weeks, leaving communities without access to basic treatment for malnutrition, cholera, and maternal emergencies.
The shutdowns follow significant reductions in international funding. Donor countries facing their own economic pressures have slashed budgets for humanitarian programs in the Horn of Africa. Somalia, already struggling with decades of conflict and climate shocks, is now seeing the direct consequences of these cuts.
In rural areas, families walk for days only to find locked doors and empty shelves. Pregnant women and children under five are the hardest hit. Malnutrition rates have spiked, with some regions reporting acute hunger levels that meet the technical definition of famine. Aid workers describe a slow-motion catastrophe, where preventable deaths are becoming routine.
The United Nations has warned that without immediate funding, the situation will spiral further. More than 6 million Somalis are projected to face crisis-level food insecurity by mid-year. Health officials say reopening the closed centres is not just a matter of logistics but of survival. For now, the gates remain shut, and the clock is ticking.
