The Australian Digital Health Agency has confirmed a major shift in how My Health Record is managed, moving away from a single primary contractor to a multi-supplier operating model. As part of this transition, Accenture has signed a new three-year contract to continue providing core services, but the agency is now spreading responsibilities across several vendors.
The change comes as the agency faces increasing pressure on cyber governance, with recent warnings from HIMSS and the emergence of GPT-6 Astra adding new layers of complexity. These developments mean the CI and digital health teams are no longer just managing data flows but also navigating a more fragmented supplier landscape with stricter security expectations.
Under the new arrangement, Accenture will retain a central role, but other suppliers will handle specific functions such as infrastructure, interoperability, and user support. The agency says this approach will improve resilience and flexibility, allowing it to adapt faster to changing clinical needs and emerging threats.
However, industry observers note that multi-supplier models bring their own challenges, particularly around accountability and data integration. The agency has acknowledged this and is setting up a dedicated governance framework to coordinate between vendors, with clear performance metrics and incident response protocols.
The renewed contract with Accenture is seen as a stabilising move, ensuring continuity while the broader ecosystem is reorganised. But the real test will be how well the agency manages the handoffs between suppliers, especially when it comes to protecting sensitive health data. With cyber warnings becoming more specific and frequent, the pressure is on to get this right.
