Texas State Parks hold ‘ruck' hikes to raise awareness for veterans' mental health

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is set to host a series of ruck hikes throughout September, aiming to draw attention to mental health challenges faced by veterans. The events will take place across multiple state parks, inviting participants to carry weighted packs while walking designated trails.

Rucking, a military-style exercise that involves walking with a loaded backpack, is being used as a symbolic and physical act of solidarity. Organizers say the weight of the pack represents the unseen burdens many veterans carry long after their service ends. The hikes are open to the public, though veterans, active-duty service members, and their families are especially encouraged to join.

Each hike will be led by park staff or trained volunteers who will also share information about available mental health resources. The department notes that the goal is not just exercise, but conversation. By walking together, participants can create a supportive space where discussing mental health becomes more natural and less stigmatized.

The series kicks off in early September and will run on select dates through the end of the month. Locations vary from Hill Country trails to East Texas pine forests. No prior rucking experience is required, and beginners can start with lighter loads or no pack at all. Water, sturdy shoes, and sunscreen are recommended.

The initiative aligns with broader national efforts to reduce suicide rates among veterans, which remain a pressing concern. Texas officials hope the hikes will encourage more people to check in on the veterans in their lives and to seek help when needed. Registration is available online through the individual park pages, and some hikes may have limited capacity to ensure a safe and intimate group experience.
