New AI Tool Detects Subtle Heart Attacks in EKG Readings

A newly approved artificial intelligence tool is changing how hospitals screen for severe heart attacks by analyzing electrocardiograms, or EKGs, with a level of detail that can escape the human eye. The technology is designed to flag not only obvious cardiac events but also rarer patterns that point to blocked arteries, which often go unnoticed during routine testing.

Traditional EKG interpretation depends on trained clinicians who look for specific waveforms and rhythms. While effective for many cases, this approach can miss subtle signs of ischemia, a condition where the heart muscle does not receive enough blood. Those missed signals can delay treatment and lead to lasting damage.

The AI system was built using large datasets of EKG recordings linked to confirmed patient outcomes. By learning from thousands of examples, it can identify warning signs that may appear normal to a busy emergency room doctor or technician. The company behind the tool says it can catch patterns associated with occlusion, a blockage that cuts off blood flow and requires immediate intervention.

Hospitals adopting the tool hope it will serve as a second set of eyes, especially in high-pressure settings where time matters. A faster, more accurate diagnosis could mean quicker catheterization procedures and better survival rates. Still, experts caution that AI should support, not replace, clinical judgment. The tool is meant to assist medical teams, not make final decisions on its own. Further studies will determine how well it performs across diverse patient populations and real-world conditions.
