Rethinking Heart Health for Women

Rethinking Heart Health for Women

For years, heart disease has been treated as a condition that mostly affects men. That assumption has shaped research, screening practices, and how women themselves understand their own risk. A growing body of evidence now challenges that view, and it points to something doctors say should change how prevention works from the ground up.

"We now know that unique signals of cardiovascular risk in women can be identified years and decades before heart disease develops," writes preventive cardiologist and epidemiologist Sadiya S. Khan. The statement reframes the timeline of prevention. Instead of waiting for symptoms to appear in midlife or later, clinicians can look for warning signs much earlier, during pregnancy, around menopause, and in the years in between.

Those signals include conditions such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and certain autoimmune disorders, all of which appear more often in women and carry long-term cardiovascular consequences. Yet they are frequently treated as isolated events rather than as markers of future risk. Khan argues that recognizing these patterns could allow earlier intervention, from lifestyle changes to closer monitoring and targeted treatment.

The shift also requires women to know their own numbers and history. Blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar matter, but so does a complete picture of reproductive and pregnancy history. Bringing that information into routine care could help close a gap in outcomes that has persisted for too long.
