Americans across the political spectrum share a common frustration: the cost of health care keeps rising while their ability to pay for it does not. Surveys consistently show that medical bills rank among the top financial worries for households, regardless of party affiliation or income level. Yet Congress has repeatedly failed to turn that broad agreement into meaningful legislation.
The reasons are familiar but still maddening. Lawmakers disagree on the mechanisms, even when they agree on the goal. Some push for price transparency, others for caps on out-of-pocket spending, and still others for changes to how hospitals and insurers negotiate rates. Each approach has its own coalition of supporters and detractors, and the result is often gridlock rather than progress.
Meanwhile, patients continue to face the consequences. Premiums climb, deductibles grow, and surprise bills arrive long after treatment ends. Families delay care, skip prescriptions, and make difficult choices between medical needs and other essentials. These are not abstract policy problems; they are daily realities for millions of people.
What patients need is relief they can actually feel: lower costs at the pharmacy counter, clearer pricing before treatment, and protection from bills they never expected. Congress does not lack ideas. It lacks the will to act on the one issue where voters overwhelmingly agree. Until lawmakers set aside partisan maneuvering and focus on practical solutions, the gap between public consensus and legislative action will remain. Patients deserve better than that.
