How wearing smart textiles could transform health and safety for people with additional needs

A bra, a vest, a sock, a pillow and a pair of gloves might seem like unlikely places to find technology tackling serious health, safety and communication problems. But at Nottingham Trent University, researchers are turning ordinary clothing and everyday items into tools that could change lives for people with additional needs.

The work focuses on smart textiles, fabrics woven or fitted with sensors that monitor the body and its surroundings. Unlike bulky medical devices, these garments are designed to be worn or used without drawing attention. A vest might track breathing and heart rate. A sock could detect changes in movement or pressure. A pillow may watch for signs of distress during sleep. Gloves could translate hand gestures into signals that help someone communicate.

For people with conditions such as autism, dementia, epilepsy or physical disabilities, the benefits could be substantial. Continuous monitoring can catch problems early, alert carers when something is wrong and reduce the need for constant supervision. That means greater independence for the wearer and less anxiety for families.

Researchers say the challenge is making the technology comfortable, durable and affordable enough for daily use. Washability, battery life and skin sensitivity all matter. Still, the potential is clear. Clothing already sits close to the body all day. Turning that closeness into a source of care and safety is a practical step forward, and it may soon become part of ordinary life.
