Macon Co. Health Department starts drive thru flu, COVID vaccination clinics

The Macon County Health Department has begun operating drive-thru clinics to provide flu and COVID-19 vaccinations to residents. The move comes as flu season arrives earlier than expected, prompting health officials to make getting protected more convenient.

Doctors note that flu season typically gains momentum later in the fall, but this year cases are already climbing. That early spike has raised concerns about hospital capacity and the potential for a difficult winter if vaccination rates stay low. Health officials say the drive-thru format allows people to stay in their vehicles, reducing contact and making the process faster for those with busy schedules or mobility concerns.

The clinics offer both flu shots and COVID-19 vaccines, and residents can receive either or both during a single visit. Staff members are on hand to check eligibility, answer questions, and administer doses. No appointment is required at most locations, though officials encourage people to bring identification and insurance cards if they have them.

Public health experts continue to stress that vaccination remains the most effective way to reduce severe illness, hospitalization, and death from both viruses. They also recommend handwashing, staying home when sick, and avoiding crowded indoor spaces during peak transmission periods.

The department plans to rotate the drive-thru sites across the county in the coming weeks. Residents are advised to check with the health department for specific dates, times, and locations as the schedule develops.
