Health Department: Santa Fe County patient contracts, recovers from hantavirus

A resident of Santa Fe County has successfully recovered after contracting hantavirus, a rare but serious respiratory disease. State health officials confirmed the case, which serves as a critical reminder of the virus's presence in New Mexico.

Hantavirus is primarily carried by deer mice and transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodent droppings, urine, or saliva, particularly when inhaled in disturbed, dusty areas. The illness begins with flu-like symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and fatigue. It can rapidly progress to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a severe respiratory condition marked by coughing and shortness of breath as the lungs fill with fluid.

HPS is a severe medical emergency with a fatality rate of approximately 40%. Health authorities emphasize that early recognition of symptoms and immediate medical care are vital for survival. The successful recovery of the Santa Fe County patient underscores this point.

Residents are urged to take precautions when cleaning sheds, cabins, or other areas where rodents may nest. Key recommendations include ventilating enclosed spaces for at least 30 minutes before entering, thoroughly wetting down areas with a disinfectant before cleaning to avoid stirring up dust, and wearing gloves and a mask. Preventing rodent infestations by sealing up holes and keeping food in sealed containers is the best defense against exposure.
