A parasitic outbreak in Michigan is showing no signs of slowing down. State health officials have now confirmed over 700 cases of cyclosporiasis, a significant jump from previous weeks. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported that 36 people have been hospitalized due to the infection. The numbers continue to climb as investigators work to trace the source of the contamination.
Cyclosporiasis is caused by the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite, which enters the body through contaminated food or water. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue. They can appear days or even weeks after exposure. Health authorities are urging anyone with symptoms to see a doctor, as the infection requires specific antibiotics to treat.
The outbreak appears concentrated in several counties, but cases have been reported across the state. Officials are interviewing patients to identify common food items. Past outbreaks in the U.S. have often been linked to imported fresh produce like cilantro, basil, or salad mixes. The investigation remains active, and no single source has been confirmed yet.
Residents are advised to wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly and to practice good hand hygiene. The state is coordinating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to monitor the situation. With the case count still rising, health leaders expect the numbers to grow before the outbreak is contained.
