More than 70 students from Detroit schools spent a day at Michigan State University, trading classroom theory for hands-on labs and real-world demonstrations. The visit, focused on kinesiology, gave the group a chance to see how movement, exercise and athletic performance are studied at the college level.
The students rotated through several stations, including motion capture technology that tracked their own running and jumping mechanics. They also tried out equipment used to measure muscle activity and learned how heart rate and breathing change under physical stress. Organizers said the goal was not just to teach science, but to show how those principles apply to everyday life and to careers in sports medicine, physical therapy and coaching.
Beyond the experiments, the day included talks from MSU faculty and current students, who shared what it is like to study in the field. For many of the visitors, it was their first time on a major university campus. One teacher who accompanied the group said the experience made the idea of college feel more real and reachable. The event was part of a broader effort to connect Detroit youth with science, technology and health-related fields early in their education.
