A new campaign is calling for mandatory mental health home visits, arguing that such a policy could prevent tragedies and provide critical support to those who are most isolated. The initiative is led by Abbey Wright, who says that regular home visits could have made a difference for her father, a man who struggled with severe depression.
Wright's father died by suicide after years of battling his condition. She believes that if mental health professionals had been required to check on him at home, they might have seen warning signs he was able to hide during brief office appointments. "He could put on a brave face for 15 minutes in a clinic," Wright said. "But at home, the truth was impossible to hide."
The proposed system would mandate that individuals diagnosed with certain severe mental health conditions receive unannounced or scheduled visits from trained professionals. Supporters argue that this approach mirrors existing protocols for child welfare or parole supervision, where in-person checks are standard. Critics, however, raise concerns about patient autonomy and the potential for the system to feel intrusive or punitive.
Wright acknowledges those concerns but stresses that the goal is not surveillance, but connection. "We are not talking about policing people," she said. "We are talking about showing up. That simple act of someone knocking on the door can be a lifeline."
The campaign has gained traction among mental health advocacy groups, though funding and legal hurdles remain significant. For now, Wright continues to share her story, hoping that her family's loss can lead to a system that catches people before they fall through the cracks.
