Wyoming directs rural health funds to critical access hospitals, EMS and more

Wyoming has started putting its new federal rural health funding to work, directing the first year's $205 million toward critical access hospitals, emergency medical services, and other frontline care providers. The money comes from the Rural Health Transformation Program, a federal initiative aimed at shoring up healthcare in sparsely populated states.

State health officials say the initial allocation will focus on keeping small hospitals open, upgrading aging equipment, and stabilizing ambulance services that often struggle with thin budgets and long response distances. A significant portion will also go toward workforce recruitment, particularly for nurses and paramedics in areas where hiring has been a persistent challenge.

The program is designed to give Wyoming more flexibility than traditional Medicaid or Medicare reimbursements, allowing communities to tailor solutions to their specific needs.
