Wilmington Health urology department set to close end of August

Wilmington Health urology department set to close end of August

Patients of Wilmington Health's urology department began receiving letters last week notifying them that the practice will be "suspending operations" as of August 31. The sudden closure has left many patients scrambling to find new specialists and to transfer their medical records in a short window of time.

The letters, sent to current patients, did not provide a detailed explanation for the suspension of services. However, the move appears to be part of a broader restructuring within the healthcare network. Wilmington Health has been a major provider in the region, and the loss of its urology department creates a significant gap in local specialty care.

Urology services cover a wide range of conditions, including kidney stones, prostate issues, and bladder problems. For many patients, especially those undergoing ongoing treatment for chronic conditions or cancer, finding a new provider on short notice can be stressful and disruptive. Local hospitals and independent urology practices may see an increase in demand as displaced patients seek new appointments.

Wilmington Health has advised patients to contact their primary care provider for referrals to other specialists. The health system has not yet announced whether the urology department will reopen at a later date or if the suspension is permanent. Patients with scheduled appointments after August 31 are being contacted directly to cancel and reschedule elsewhere.
