Trump’s flavored vape push sparks backlash from MAHA influencers, health officials

The FDA has quietly opened a new pathway for tobacco companies to sell flavored e-cigarettes, recently granting its first authorization for fruit-flavored vapes. The move, backed by former President Donald Trump, has immediately triggered sharp backlash from public health officials and a growing network of MAHA influencers who argue the decision prioritizes industry profits over youth safety.

Critics say the policy shift undermines years of work aimed at curbing teen vaping. The MAHA movement, a coalition of wellness advocates and anti-corporate health activists, has called the authorization a "betrayal of common sense." They point to data showing that sweet and fruity flavors are the primary draw for underage users. "This is not about harm reduction for adults. It is about hooking a new generation on nicotine," one prominent MAHA voice posted.

Health officials are also sounding alarms. The American Lung Association and several state attorneys general have condemned the FDA's decision, warning it could reverse recent declines in youth vaping rates. They argue that the agency's own research shows flavored products increase initiation among teens.

Supporters of the policy, including some free-market advocates, claim that flavored vapes help adult smokers transition away from combustible cigarettes. Trump, who has positioned himself as a populist defender of personal choice, has yet to comment directly on the backlash. However, the controversy is already reshaping the debate over tobacco regulation, pitting public health against industry interests in a fight that shows no signs of cooling down.
