This wasn't at all what I imagined when I first lit up. For millennials like me, marijuana was sold as a harmless escape, a natural remedy, even a wellness tool. We grew up with pop culture celebrating stoner culture, and legalization campaigns promised a safer, more enlightened alternative to alcohol. But now, researchers are issuing a stark warning that the fantasy is crumbling.
Recent studies are revealing a darker side that many of us ignored. Heavy, frequent use, especially of high-potency strains, is linked to rising rates of cannabis use disorder, anxiety, and even psychosis in vulnerable individuals. The narrative that weed is non-addictive and consequence-free is proving dangerously false. I remember thinking it was just a plant, nothing to worry about. But the data shows that about 30% of users may develop some degree of problem use, and the risk spikes dramatically for those who start young.
The warning is not about prohibition but about honesty. We were told it was a cure for anxiety, yet for many, it becomes a crutch that worsens the very symptoms it was meant to soothe. The industry, with its gummy bears and sleek vape pens, has made it feel like candy, not a potent psychoactive substance. Researchers now urge a more cautious approach: start low, go slow, and recognize that daily use is not without serious trade-offs. The fantasy is over. It is time to treat weed with the same respect and wariness we give to alcohol or any other drug.
