Health officials in Spain's Basque Country have launched a formal investigation after confirming that 253 patients, mostly children, were administered expired vaccines. The incident occurred at a health center in the region, where vials of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, used to protect against serious infections, were used past their valid date.
The regional health minister, Gotzone Sagardui, has issued a public apology for the procedural failure. In an effort to reassure concerned families, health authorities have emphasized that the expired doses do not pose a safety risk to the children who received them. Experts state that the primary concern with an expired vaccine is a potential reduction in its effectiveness, not inherent danger.
The investigation will focus on determining the chain of events that led to the vaccines remaining in stock and being administered after their expiry date. Health services are now reviewing all inventory and administration protocols to prevent any repeat of the error. All affected families have been personally notified and are being offered medical follow-up to monitor the vaccine's efficacy.
