OSDH: Health alert issued as Oklahoma sees 129 cases of C. auris

The Oklahoma State Department of Health has issued a public health alert after confirming 129 cases of Candida auris, a dangerous and drug-resistant fungus, across the state. Health officials are urging medical facilities and the public to remain vigilant as the number of infections continues to rise.

Candida auris, or C. auris, is a type of yeast that can cause severe illness, especially in people with weakened immune systems or those who have long or frequent stays in healthcare settings. It is known for being resistant to multiple antifungal drugs, making treatment difficult. The fungus can spread easily in hospitals and nursing homes through contact with contaminated surfaces or from person to person.

The health department noted that the cases have been identified in various parts of the state, though they did not specify exact locations. Officials are advising healthcare providers to follow strict infection control measures, including thorough cleaning and screening of patients who may be at risk.

Symptoms of C. auris infection can include fever and chills that do not improve with antibiotics, but the fungus can also live on the skin without causing illness, making it harder to detect. The alert comes as part of a broader national concern, as cases of C. auris have been increasing across the United States in recent years.

Residents are encouraged to practice good hand hygiene and to talk to their healthcare provider if they have concerns about infection risks.
