Participants in the mental health-themed 5K held at Nay Aug Park on Saturday were up for the challenge, not simply to finish well, but to fight the stigma surrounding mental health. Lisa Evanofski of Wilkes-Barre came in last in her category, but she said that did not matter to her. What mattered was showing up and being part of a community that supports open conversations about mental health.
The event drew runners, walkers, and spectators of all ages and fitness levels. Organizers said the goal was to create a welcoming space where people could move together and talk openly about mental health without fear of judgment. Alongside the race, the fair offered activities including wellness workshops, informational booths, and family-friendly games.
Volunteers and local organizations staffed tables with resources on counseling services, crisis support, and stress management. Several participants shared personal stories about their own mental health journeys, and organizers noted that these moments of honesty helped break down barriers.
Evanofski said the atmosphere kept her going and that finishing last felt like a win because she crossed the line with support from strangers who had become friends over the course of the morning. Organizers plan to make the event an annual gathering, with hopes of expanding activities and reaching more members of the community in the years ahead.
