Governor Tina Kotek has pledged to fight for the state's landmark reproductive health law after a circuit court judge issued an oral ruling declaring significant portions of it unconstitutional. The decision targets the 2023 Oregon Reproductive Health Equity Act (RHEA), which expanded access and insurance coverage for abortion, gender-affirming care, and other reproductive services.
In a strongly worded statement, Governor Kotek expressed deep disappointment with the preliminary ruling, calling it a dangerous step backward for healthcare freedom in Oregon. She emphasized the law's critical role in ensuring all Oregonians, regardless of income, identity, or insurance status, can access essential medical care.
The legal challenge was brought by several groups arguing the law violates the state constitution by mandating coverage for procedures some insurers or employers may object to on religious grounds. The recent ruling is not a final order, and the law remains in effect as the case is expected to proceed through the appeals process.
Governor Kotek affirmed her administration's full commitment to defending the RHEA, stating she will use every tool available to protect Oregonians' right to comprehensive reproductive healthcare. She urged residents to remain confident in their current healthcare access while the state prepares its legal defense, framing the coming battle as fundamental to upholding Oregon's values of equity and bodily autonomy.
