New York state health officials are closely watching a nationwide outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection that has already sickened thousands of people across the country. The New York State Department of Health is now sharing details on how the illness affects consumers and what steps they can take to protect themselves.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite, which is typically spread through contaminated food or water. Common symptoms include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue. In severe cases, the infection can lead to dehydration and weight loss, especially in people with weakened immune systems. The illness is not spread directly from person to person.

Health officials say the infection often comes from imported fresh produce, such as cilantro, basil, and raspberries. The NYSDOH recommends washing all fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating them. They also advise cooking food to safe temperatures and avoiding untreated water from lakes or streams.

While most people recover without treatment, the infection can last for weeks if not addressed. Doctors may prescribe antibiotics for severe cases. The department urges anyone with persistent symptoms to contact their healthcare provider.
