All major health systems in Lancaster County will be using the same online portal for health records by Nov. 2, allowing caregivers to access records with patient consent regardless of where treatment takes place.
The shift means patients will no longer need to juggle multiple logins or request paper records to be transferred between providers. Instead, a shared digital system will give doctors and nurses a fuller picture of a patient's history, including past diagnoses, medications, lab results and imaging.
Hospital officials say the change is expected to cut delays caused by faxed paperwork and phone calls between offices. It should also reduce repeated tests when a patient moves between facilities.
Privacy rules remain in place. Providers can only view records when a patient gives consent, and access is logged. Patients will still be able to see who has opened their file.
Staff at participating locations are being trained on the new system ahead of the launch. Help desks will be available during the first weeks to assist with login issues and record requests.
The consolidation marks one of the largest coordinated technology changes in the region's health care sector in recent years. Officials say future updates could add appointment scheduling and billing tools to the same platform.
