NYC Health + Hospitals has launched a new volunteer initiative at its Woodhull facility in Brooklyn, designed to provide spiritual and emotional support for patients during pregnancy and after childbirth. The program, called the Trauma-Informed Maternal Health Chaplaincy Volunteer Program, aims to address the often-overlooked mental and spiritual needs of new and expecting mothers.
The initiative recruits and trains volunteer chaplains to work directly with patients in prenatal clinics and postpartum units. These volunteers are specifically trained in trauma-informed care, meaning they understand how past traumatic experiences can affect a person's pregnancy and recovery. The goal is to create a safe, non-judgmental space where patients can discuss fears, grief, or anxiety related to their maternal health journey.
Hospital officials noted that the program fills a critical gap in standard medical care. While doctors and nurses focus on physical health, chaplains can help patients process complex emotions, navigate difficult diagnoses, or cope with pregnancy loss. The service is available to all patients, regardless of their religious background or belief system.
The launch comes at a time when maternal health outcomes, particularly for women of color, remain a pressing concern in New York City. By integrating spiritual care into the clinical setting, the hospital hopes to improve the overall patient experience and support better health outcomes for both mothers and infants. The program is currently seeking volunteers who are interested in completing the specialized training.
