Michael Reed entered first, turning on the lights to make it feel like home before the clients arrived. He flipped switches as he walked through the formal living room, the kitchen, and the hallway. But for many people, the feeling of home is not just about lighting. It is about the air they breathe and the surfaces they touch. A house can actually make you sick if it is not maintained properly.
Indoor air quality is a major concern. Dust, mold, and pet dander can build up in carpets, upholstery, and air ducts. Experts recommend changing HVAC filters every three months. Vacuuming with a HEPA filter also helps trap tiny particles that trigger allergies. In humid climates, a dehumidifier can prevent mold growth in basements and bathrooms.
Another hidden danger is volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. These come from paints, cleaning products, and new furniture. Opening windows for just 15 minutes a day can flush out these chemicals. Using natural cleaning agents like vinegar and baking soda reduces exposure as well.
Don't forget about water. Stagnant water in pipes or under sinks can breed bacteria. Running taps for a few seconds each morning clears out any standing water. Also check for leaks around toilets and faucets, as moisture invites pests and rot.
Finally, keep clutter under control. Piles of clothes, papers, and boxes trap dust and make cleaning harder. A simple rule is to clear surfaces weekly. A healthy home is not about perfection. It is about small, consistent habits that keep the air fresh, the water clean, and the space safe.
