Families at Galena High School have been notified of a potential exposure to pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough. The warning was issued jointly by school administrators and Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH) after a confirmed case was identified within the school community.
Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by bacteria. It is known for severe, uncontrollable coughing fits that can make breathing difficult and are often followed by a characteristic "whooping" sound when inhaling. The disease can be particularly dangerous for infants, young children who are not fully vaccinated, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Health officials are urging parents and guardians to monitor their children for symptoms, which can initially resemble a common cold but progress to more severe coughing spells. NNPH emphasizes that vaccination is the most effective method of prevention. They advise families to review their immunization records and ensure all household members are up-to-date on their pertussis vaccines, which are typically administered as part of the DTaP or Tdap series.
The school is cooperating fully with the health investigation. While the specific details of the exposure have not been publicly released, the notification aims to ensure prompt medical attention for anyone developing symptoms to prevent further spread within the wider community.
