Travel sports have become a major part of childhood for many families, with weekend tournaments and long drives to games becoming the norm. But beneath the surface of competition and college recruitment dreams lies a growing concern: the mental health of the athletes themselves.
Dr. Jessica Higgs, a specialist in youth sports psychology, points out that while travel sports can teach resilience, teamwork, and camaraderie, they also create a unique set of pressures. The constant travel, the high cost of participation, and the intense focus on winning can wear down even the most dedicated young player. "Parents and caregivers need to have an open and honest conversation with how their kids are doing," Higgs says. She warns that the signs of burnout are often mistaken for laziness or a lack of drive.
The highs of travel sports are real. Kids get to see new places, bond with teammates, and improve their skills against tough competition. But the lows can be just as intense. Missing school, losing sleep, and feeling like their entire identity depends on a single game can lead to anxiety and depression. For many families, the question is no longer just about winning a trophy. It is about whether the cost to a child's mental health is worth the price of the jersey.
