The recent decision by US authorities to cease nearly all financial contributions to the UN reproductive and sexual health agency has raised serious concerns about the future of essential mental health services in Ukraine. Approximately 640,000 women and girls are set to be adversely affected by these cuts, which will impact psychosocial support, gender-based violence services, safe spaces, and economic empowerment programs.
The withdrawal of funding threatens to dismantle critical support systems that have been vital for the well-being of many vulnerable individuals in a country grappling with ongoing conflict and instability. Mental health professionals fear that without these services, the psychological toll on women and girls will increase, leading to heightened risks of violence and a lack of resources for recovery and empowerment.
Advocates are urging for immediate action to secure alternative funding sources to ensure that these vital programs can continue to operate and support those in need during these challenging times.
