Why Acne Still Shows Up After Puberty: A Dermatologist's Guide to Adult Breakouts

You might have thought pimples were a teenage problem, but many adults find themselves dealing with breakouts well into their 30s, 40s, and beyond. If you are asking why acne keeps appearing long after high school, you are not alone. Dermatologist Margaret Coates explains that adult acne is more common than most people realize, and it often requires a different approach than the treatments used during adolescence.

Hormonal fluctuations are a major culprit. For women, changes related to menstrual cycles, pregnancy, menopause, or even starting or stopping birth control can trigger breakouts. Stress is another big factor. When you are under pressure, your body produces more cortisol, which can increase oil production in your skin. Certain skincare products, makeup, or even hair products can clog pores without you noticing. Diet may also play a role, though it varies from person to person.

So what should you do? Coates recommends starting with a gentle routine. Avoid harsh scrubs or aggressive cleansers that strip the skin, as this can worsen inflammation. Look for non-comedogenic products labeled oil-free. Over-the-counter treatments containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can help, but if breakouts persist, see a dermatologist. Prescription options like topical retinoids or oral medications may be needed.

What not to do? Do not pick or pop pimples. This can lead to scarring and more inflammation. Do not assume adult acne is the same as teenage acne. Do not overload your skin with too many products at once. And do not ignore the possibility that an underlying medical condition, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, could be contributing. A dermatologist can help you find the real cause and a treatment plan that actually works for your adult skin.
