A new experimental drug taken as a daily pill has shown remarkable results in treating advanced pancreatic cancer, nearly doubling survival time compared to standard chemotherapy. The medication, which targets a specific genetic mutation found in some pancreatic tumors, offers a less invasive alternative to traditional intravenous infusions.
In a recent clinical trial, patients who took the pill lived an average of nearly twice as long as those receiving chemotherapy. Researchers described the outcome as "transformative" for a cancer that has historically been one of the deadliest and hardest to treat. Pancreatic cancer often goes undetected until it has spread, leaving few effective options.
The drug works by blocking a key protein that drives tumor growth in patients with a particular gene mutation. This targeted approach means the treatment attacks cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue, leading to fewer side effects than chemotherapy. Patients reported being able to continue daily activities without the severe nausea and fatigue commonly associated with infusion treatments.
While the results are promising, doctors caution that the drug is not a cure and is only effective for the subset of patients whose tumors carry the specific mutation. However, for those patients, the pill represents a significant step forward. Further studies are underway to test the drug in earlier stages of the disease and in combination with other therapies.
