Teen Suicide-Related ER Visits Are Rising Sharply

A troubling new study is putting a spotlight on a growing mental health crisis among children and teens. Researchers found that emergency room visits linked to suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts have climbed at an alarming rate over the past decade, with the steepest increases appearing among adolescents.

The data shows that young people between the ages of 12 and 17 account for a large share of these visits. Girls appear to be affected at higher rates than boys, though boys remain more likely to die by suicide. Mental health experts say the numbers reflect a broader pattern of rising anxiety, depression, and hopelessness among youth, driven by a mix of social, academic, and economic pressures.

Clinicians on the front lines report that emergency departments are increasingly becoming the first point of contact for families who cannot find timely outpatient care. Many hospitals say they lack the staff and resources to handle the surge, leaving young patients waiting for hours or days before they receive a proper evaluation.

The findings have prompted calls for better access to mental health services, earlier screening in schools, and stronger support systems for families. Experts stress that suicide is preventable and that open conversations, along with timely intervention, can save lives. Parents who notice warning signs such as withdrawal, sudden mood changes, or talk of self-harm are urged to seek help right away.
