Students in the Syracuse City School District who are struggling with mental health challenges will soon have greater access to trained professionals. The district has received a $4 million grant aimed at expanding mental health services directly within school buildings. The funding is designed to place more counselors, social workers, and psychologists in classrooms, reducing the time students wait for help.
District officials say the money will allow them to hire additional staff and provide ongoing training for teachers. The goal is to catch problems early, before they escalate into crises. Many students have faced increased anxiety, depression, and trauma since the pandemic, and schools have become the front line for identifying these issues.
The grant will also support partnerships with local community health organizations. These groups will help provide therapy and crisis intervention on site. By embedding services in schools, the district hopes to remove barriers like transportation and long waitlists that often prevent families from getting care.
Superintendent Anthony Davis called the funding a critical step. He noted that students cannot learn if they are not emotionally stable. The district plans to roll out the new services over the next two school years, with a focus on high-need elementary and middle schools. The investment reflects a growing recognition that mental health support is just as important as academic instruction.
