Swallowing faecal capsules reduces peanut allergy in six adults

Swallowing faecal capsules reduces peanut allergy in six adults

A small clinical trial has produced surprising results for people with severe peanut allergies. Six adults who swallowed capsules containing freeze-dried fecal matter from a donor without allergies showed a marked improvement in their tolerance to peanuts. The treatment, which aims to alter the gut microbiome, allowed participants to consume a small amount of peanut protein without experiencing a severe reaction.

The study, published in a medical journal, focused on the idea that the community of bacteria in the digestive tract plays a role in how the immune system responds to allergens. By introducing a healthy donor's microbes, researchers hoped to shift the recipient's immune response away from an allergic one. The six adults, who all had a history of severe reactions, were given the capsules over a period of several weeks. After the treatment, they were able to tolerate a dose of peanut protein that was several times higher than what they could handle before, though it was still a small amount.

The researchers were careful to note that this is not a cure. The participants still had to avoid peanuts in their daily lives, and the level of tolerance achieved was not enough to allow them to eat peanut butter sandwiches. However, the results are considered a proof of concept. The hope is that with further refinement, this approach could offer a new way to reduce the risk of accidental exposure for people with severe food allergies. The team plans to expand the trial to a larger group of participants to confirm the findings and to explore how long the effect might last. While the idea of swallowing fecal capsules may sound unappealing, the potential to ease the constant fear of a severe reaction is a powerful motivator for many patients.
