Study finds 5 daily servings may fall short of key heart-health compounds

New research indicates that the commonly recommended five daily servings of fruits and vegetables might not provide sufficient levels of certain compounds linked to better heart health. Scientists report that many people in the United States and the United Kingdom are falling short of consuming enough flavanol-rich produce to achieve optimal cardiovascular benefits.

Flavanols, a type of bioactive compound found in foods like berries, apples, tea, and cocoa, have been associated with improved blood pressure and reduced risk of heart disease. The study, which analyzed dietary data from thousands of participants, found that current intake levels in both countries are often too low to meet thresholds tied to measurable heart health improvements.

The researchers suggest that simply hitting the standard "five a day" target does not guarantee adequate flavanol consumption, as not all fruits and vegetables are rich in these compounds. For instance, common choices like bananas, potatoes, and citrus fruits contain lower amounts compared to options such as dark berries, pears, or green tea.

The findings highlight a gap between general dietary guidelines and the specific intake of bioactive nutrients. While the study does not dismiss the value of eating a variety of produce, it points to a need for more tailored advice. The authors recommend that public health guidance might need to emphasize not just the quantity of fruits and vegetables, but the specific types that deliver higher levels of heart-protective flavanols. Further research is expected to refine these dietary targets for different populations.
