A North Texas non-profit organization is raising alarms that a new state law, often referred to as the "Parental Bill of Rights," is creating unintended consequences for vulnerable students. The group says the legislation has already prompted many school districts to disband outreach-oriented campus clubs, which could leave "at-risk" youth without critical support systems.
The law, which focuses on parental oversight and transparency in schools, has led administrators to rethink programs that involve student engagement outside of core academics. According to the non-profit, clubs designed to provide peer support, mentorship, and mental health resources are being dropped because of concerns over compliance and potential liability. These groups often served as a lifeline for students dealing with depression, anxiety, or family instability.
Without these safe spaces, the non-profit argues, students who are already struggling may lose their primary connection to trusted adults and peers. The organization is calling for a clearer interpretation of the law that allows schools to maintain these support networks while still respecting parental rights. They warn that the absence of these clubs could lead to a rise in mental health crises among students who feel isolated or unheard.
