The NHS app is set to introduce artificial intelligence that will guide patients to the most appropriate healthcare service for their needs. The update, which will be rolled out to all users in England by April 2028, aims to reduce pressure on emergency departments and GP surgeries.
The AI system will analyze symptoms reported by users and direct them to options such as a pharmacy, a walk-in center, a GP appointment, or, if necessary, a hospital emergency department. Officials say the tool is designed to help people avoid long waits at the wrong facility and to ensure that those with urgent conditions get seen faster.
The technology will be integrated into the existing NHS app, which already allows users to book appointments, order prescriptions, and view their medical records. The new feature is expected to be tested in selected areas before a nationwide release.
Health leaders have emphasized that the AI will not replace human judgment. Instead, it will act as a triage tool, providing recommendations based on symptoms and medical history. Patients will still be able to speak to a healthcare professional if they prefer.
The move is part of a broader effort to digitize the health service and improve efficiency. Critics have raised concerns about data privacy and the accuracy of AI diagnoses, but the NHS has stated that the system will be rigorously tested and comply with all safety standards.
