New report highlights health of the UK's plankton communities

Researchers from the University of Plymouth have led the production of a new report highlighting the impact of climate change on marine plankton and pelagic habitats in UK waters. Published by the Marine Climate Change Impacts Partnership, the assessment draws on decades of continuous data collection to paint a detailed picture of shifting conditions across the country's seas.

The findings show a complex situation. While overall plankton abundance has remained relatively stable in many areas, the species composition is changing noticeably. Warmer-water species are becoming more common, particularly in the southern North Sea and Celtic Sea, while cold-water specialists are retreating northward. These shifts have knock-on effects up the food chain, affecting sand eels, cod, and seabirds that rely on specific plankton types during critical life stages.

The report also notes a decline in the size of certain plankton groups, which could reduce the efficiency of carbon transfer to deeper waters. Seasonal timing is shifting too, with spring blooms appearing earlier in some regions. This mismatch between plankton peaks and the breeding cycles of fish and other marine life raises concerns for future fisheries productivity.

Scientists stress that continued monitoring is essential to track these changes and inform management decisions. The report calls for stronger integration of plankton data into marine policy and conservation planning, particularly as pressures from warming, acidification, and nutrient runoff intensify.
