New Jersey health authorities have confirmed the state's first measles case of the year, prompting a public warning about potential exposure at Newark Liberty International Airport. The New Jersey Department of Health announced that an individual diagnosed with measles traveled through the airport on an unspecified date, potentially exposing other travelers and staff to the highly contagious virus.
Officials are urging anyone who was present at Newark Airport during the identified timeframe to monitor for symptoms, which typically appear seven to 14 days after exposure. Measles symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, and a characteristic rash that spreads from the head to the rest of the body. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area, making transmission possible even without direct contact.
Health experts emphasize that vaccination remains the most effective protection against measles. The MMR vaccine, which covers measles, mumps, and rubella, is recommended for all children and adults who have not been fully immunized. Unvaccinated individuals, pregnant women, infants too young for vaccination, and those with weakened immune systems are at highest risk.
This marks the first confirmed measles case in New Jersey so far this year, following a period of relatively low incidence. The state health department is collaborating with local health officials to identify and notify close contacts of the infected individual. Anyone who suspects exposure or develops symptoms is advised to contact their healthcare provider immediately, but to call ahead before visiting a medical facility to prevent further spread.
