For the first time since Gallup began tracking the issue, fewer than half of U.S. adults say they can consistently get and pay for the health care they need. The polling firm's latest data shows that a majority of Americans now fall into the categories of "insecure" or "desperate" when it comes to medical care.
The survey, conducted in late 2024, found that only 48 percent of respondents reported being "secure" in their ability to afford and access care. That marks a sharp drop from 62 percent in 2021. The remaining 52 percent described their situation as either "insecure" or "desperate," with the latter group nearly doubling since the pandemic.
Gallup defines "insecure" as having difficulty paying for care or skipping treatment due to cost, while "desperate" means going without needed care or facing serious financial strain from medical bills. The findings cut across income levels, though lower-income households were hit hardest. Even among those with insurance, many reported high deductibles and surprise bills as major obstacles.
Experts point to rising premiums, stagnant wages, and the end of pandemic-era protections like continuous Medicaid enrollment as key drivers. The results come as political debates over health reform intensify, with both parties offering competing visions for lowering costs. For now, the data paints a stark picture: for the first time in Gallup's tracking history, the average American is more likely to feel insecure about health care than secure.
