Kenya's High Court has found Health Minister Aden Duale in contempt of court for failing to comply with an order related to a U.S.-backed Ebola treatment facility. The court directed Duale to appear for sentencing on Tuesday, escalating a legal standoff that has drawn attention to the government's handling of the project.
The facility, located at the Laikipia Air Base, was developed with support from the United States as part of efforts to strengthen pandemic preparedness in the region. In early February, Duale publicly defended the project, stating that it would serve the health interests of Kenyans while also supporting international partners in disease control. He argued that the center was built to strict safety standards and would not pose a risk to local communities.
However, a group of residents and activists challenged the project in court, raising concerns about environmental impact and lack of public consultation. The court initially issued an order halting construction, but the government proceeded with the work, leading to the contempt ruling. Legal experts say the case tests the balance between national health security and judicial authority. Duale now faces potential fines or imprisonment unless he can justify his actions to the court.
