Health department to hold free flood-recovery vaccine clinic Friday at Wesleyan

The Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department is set to host a free vaccine clinic this Friday, July 24, at West Virginia Wesleyan College. The clinic will open at 10 a.m. and is aimed at anyone who has been in contact with floodwater or is currently involved in cleanup efforts.

Health officials are offering two types of vaccines at no cost: Tdap, which protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis, and hepatitis A. Both shots are recommended for people exposed to flood conditions, where bacteria and viruses can thrive in standing water and debris. Tetanus is a particular concern for those handling sharp objects or contaminated materials during cleanup.

The clinic is open to the public, and no appointment is necessary. Organizers encourage anyone who has been working in flooded areas or wading through water to come in, even if they are not sure whether they need the shot. The health department will have staff on site to answer questions and check vaccination records.

This effort is part of a broader response to recent flooding in the region, which has left many homes and businesses damaged. Health officials stress that prevention is key, especially as recovery work continues in the days and weeks ahead.
