Employer Contributions to Health Savings Accounts Are on the Rise

Employer money is becoming a bigger part of how health savings accounts get funded, according to Internal Revenue Service data highlighted in a recent report from the Congressional Research Service. The findings show that while workers still put in most of the money themselves, the share coming from employers has climbed steadily in recent years.

The report examined contribution patterns across different income levels and found clear differences. Higher earners tend to contribute more overall, and they are also more likely to receive an employer match or direct deposit into their accounts. Lower income workers often contribute less, even when an employer offers support, which suggests cost pressures and limited cash flow play a role.

Health savings accounts are tied to high deductible health plans. They let people set aside money before taxes for medical costs, and unused funds roll over year after year. Employers can add money too, and those contributions are not taxed as income to the worker.

The data shows that employer contributions have grown faster than worker contributions in some brackets, though the overall totals remain modest compared to the maximum allowed. The report does not take a position on policy, but it lays out how the accounts are used in practice.

For workers, the takeaway is simple. If an employer offers a match or a direct contribution, that money can add up over time, especially for those who stay in a high deductible plan for several years.
