Ebola outbreak in Central Africa declared a ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern’

Ebola outbreak in Central Africa declared a ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern’

The World Health Organization has officially designated the expanding Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring Uganda as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The decision comes as the number of confirmed cases continues to climb and the virus shows clear signs of spreading across national borders.

Health officials point to several factors behind the emergency declaration. The number of new infections is rising steadily, and the outbreak has now reached urban areas where containment becomes far more difficult. There are also major gaps in understanding the true size of the epidemic. Many cases go unreported, and contact tracing efforts have struggled to keep pace with the virus's movement.

The situation in Uganda is particularly worrying. Several cases have been confirmed there, all linked to travelers who crossed from the DRC. This cross-border transmission raises the risk of the virus reaching other countries in the region. The WHO has called for increased surveillance, better coordination between nations, and a surge in medical resources to the affected areas.

This is the second major Ebola outbreak in Central Africa in recent years. The previous one, also centered in the DRC, took more than two thousand lives before it was finally brought under control. Health workers on the ground are now racing to contain this new wave before it reaches a similar scale. Vaccination campaigns have been launched, but logistical challenges and community mistrust remain serious obstacles.
