6 takeaways from STAT’s investigation into the U.S. alcohol epidemic

Alcohol remains the most persistent and underappreciated drug problem in the United States. A new investigative series, The Deadliest Drug, reveals the scale of the damage. Here are six critical takeaways from the reporting.

First, the death toll is staggering. Alcohol-related deaths have more than doubled in the past two decades, now claiming over 178,000 lives each year. That number exceeds deaths from opioids and all other illicit drugs combined.

Second, the crisis is not limited to severe alcoholism. Moderate drinking is a major driver of harm. Research shows that even one or two drinks a day can increase the risk of certain cancers, including breast and colorectal cancer. The public largely remains unaware of this link.

Third, the alcohol industry has fought hard to keep these risks hidden. Lobbying efforts have blocked warning labels that mention cancer, and marketing campaigns have successfully framed alcohol as a harmless lifestyle accessory.

Fourth, the healthcare system is failing patients. Most doctors never screen for alcohol misuse. When they do, treatments are rarely offered. Only a tiny fraction of people with alcohol use disorder receive medication that could help them cut back or quit.

Fifth, the pandemic made everything worse. Drinking rates surged during lockdowns, and the trend has not reversed. Emergency room visits for alcohol-related liver disease have spiked, especially among younger adults.

Finally, the series points to a path forward. Stronger warning labels, better access to treatment, and a shift in cultural attitudes could save lives. But change requires confronting an industry that profits from addiction.
